Ethan Miley, PE, LEED AP

Ethan received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of California at San Diego in 1995. After graduating he spent three years as field engineer for industrial waste water treatment, which took him all over the U.S. and to Asia.

He gained valuable hands-on experience with process piping, electrical, controls, and managing subcontractors. In 1998 he moved to Colorado and joined The Boulder Engineering Company. He now has over 15 years of experience in all aspects of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering and is one of the few engineers with sufficient grasp of MEP systems to design properly integrated systems. He has grown to be a primary project manager and Senior Associate. He is the company’s primary LEED coordinator and has worked on numerous LEED projects. He continues to keep abreast of the latest technologies and design approaches to find the most appropriate and efficient systems for his clients. With all that, Ethan is also our IT expert: a true geek among geeks.

Michael Vair, PE

Michael is a licensed mechanical and electrical engineer and tends to see the sunny side of things at The Boulder Engineering Company. As the resident solar photovoltaic (PV) expert he has designed PV systems totaling over 7 megawatts.

He also heads up the commercial cultivation projects, with designs in 7 states, about 500,000 square feet and counting. He strives to incorporate simple system design with minimal install costs and maximum system outputs in all projects he touches. Michael received his bachelor’s degrees in both Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in May of 2000. After graduating, he spent four years working as an Applications Engineer for Johnson Controls, Inc. Shortly after leaving Johnson Controls, he obtained his first Professional Engineering License in Mechanical Engineering, then obtained the General Securities Representative License (Series 7), and worked as a Financial Consultant for two years. Michael joined the Boulder Engineering Company in 2006 and then obtained his second Professional Engineering License in Electrical Engineering. He is now a Principal Engineer and project manager. In addition to designing Photovoltaic Solar and Cultivation projects, Michael Also focuses on Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing System design for many project types. Outside of work he enjoys hiking, camping, skiing, and has a passion for triathlons and his family.

Emily Rahn

Emily enjoys working as part of a team and constantly increasing both the depth and breadth of her knowledge. She is comfortable with all aspects of electrical design including basic interior light layouts and photometric calculations. She has an eye for detail and is conversant with the latest design software and building codes.

Emily graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2002. She worked at Geothermal Development Associates in Nevada for several years before taking time off from engineering to work with animals and backpack in South America, New Zealand, and Australia. Emily has been working at the Boulder Engineering Company since 2012. When not at work she can be found running, backpacking, playing disc golf or otherwise enjoying the outdoors.

Kevin O'Brien

Kevin specializes in plumbing design and brings knowledge from the high end residential / high end commercial MEP sector. His early days of mechanical and plumbing design stem from his work experience in Vail, CO. This experience helps strengthen the team’s design background and bolsters Boulder Engineering Company’s grasp on a wide variety of projects.

Frank Gualchi

Frank Gualchi is a Miami born designer of Argentine parents with Italian roots. He received a BS & MS from Florida international University and keeps the south Florida dream alive by providing espresso coffee for all that would ask.

He has spent the last few years diving into the Colorado amenities by climbing the various canyons on the Front Range and hiking around RMNP. After half a dozen years of experience he has designed everything from small commercial chains with quick turnaround to >90,000 square feet manufacturing facilities.

Brett Hoag

Brett joined the Boulder Engineering team in March of 2015. Brett brings several years of Mechanical and Plumbing design experience on projects ranging in size and complexity to the team. Brett utilizes his knowledge and experience with Mechanical and Plumbing systems to produce cost effective and highly functioning designs that are best suited for each application.

Brett enjoys the unique problem solving and individual challenges associated with every project and strives to learn something new every day. In addition to Mechanical and Plumbing design, Brett hopes to expand his knowledge into Electrical and Lighting design with the help of his teammates to learn all aspects of building system design. In addition to design work, Brett is also the Revit Guru at Boulder Engineer and manages the teams BIM content and project standards.

Brett is a 3rd generation Colorado Native who graduated from MSU Denver in 2012. Brett is a registered Colorado EIT and is hoping to take his PE exam in the next few years. Outside of work, Brett loves to spend time with his family and enjoy the outdoors. He loves to hike, camp, boat, hunt and fish all throughout Colorado. He also enjoys working on home renovation projects and has too many hobbies to count. His latest project is finishing his basement entirely on his own where he learned many different aspects of construction through hands-on experience. Brett is also a diehard Colorado sports fan who loves his Broncos and Rockies.

Katy Hinkelman

Katy joined The Boulder Engineering Company in 2015 after receiving her MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. While at Berkeley, her research focused on the environmental impact analysis and co-design of culturally-centered homes with a California Native American tribe, the Pinoleville Pomo Nation.

A Boulder native, she received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Denver, where she also played for the university’s women’s soccer program. At DU, she graduated with departmental distinction and was elected into the Phi Beta Kappa society for excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Katy strives for a cross-disciplinary approach through her work, and contributes to designing both electrical and mechanical systems at BEC.

Adam Moyer

Adam started his engineering career near Vail, Colorado doing mechanical and plumbing design work throughout the resort towns in the region. Over the years, he has worked on a variety of projects including mixed use, condominiums, lodges, on-mountain restaurants as well as large custom homes.

Adam is also a car guy. And after a stint as a fabricator at a custom automotive shop, he’s back pursuing engineering with the great team at BEC.

Amanda McCreadie

Amanda is a motivated engineer striving to identify and solve project challenges before they become issues. She loves delving into the finer points of design while maintaining practical and economical solutions.

Amanda received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2012. She spent four years designing HVAC systems for multifamily projects along the East Coast while specializing in various green building programs. In 2017 she joined The Boulder Engineering Company to expand her range of project types and take on new disciplines. Amanda is always looking forward to new challenges and helping customers get the results they desire.

Beth Whitlock

Beth earned her BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama, graduating summa cum laude in 2015. She worked for 2 years at BMW Manufacturing in Greenville, SC before moving to Boulder.

She gained experience in Quality and Testing while co-opping in the vehicle dynamics test group (including brakes, suspension, and steering testing,) Manufacturing while running efficiency studies in the robot-heavy paint shop, then in Project Management with a small team that coordinated launches of 3 new models in one year. While each role has been slightly different, she is fascinated by the project management side all three. She joined Boulder Engineering Company Dec 2017 and is excited to be learning a completely new side of engineering designing HVAC systems!

Theresa DeSteffen

Theresa attended Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL and earned a B.S. in Computer Science. She has worked in the accounting and finance field for 7 years after being an ERP software developer for 9 years.

She has worked for Boulder Engineering since 2014 and thoroughly enjoys working with numbers and people. She strives to identify inefficiencies and improve processes while complying with federal and state regulations. She is a diehard Green Bay Packer fan and enjoys taking advantage of all that Colorado has to offer. She is honored to work for Boulder Engineering and considers the company and its employees first-rate.

Monte Preston MA, GRI

Monte is a licensed real estate agent and administrative assistant at The Boulder Engineering Company where he is ready to help with just about anything as long as it’s not engineering design work!

His specialty is helping the engineers acquire and track their 30+ licenses around the country and fulfill their continuing education requirements for each state. Monte joined the team in 2010 when real estate home sales were in a slump but stayed for the long term citing enjoyable and supportive co-workers, meaningful work that makes a difference, and the pride that comes from a job well done. When asked, he had this to say, “Our team here is the best in the business. When builders want the highest quality and need the job done right the first time, they come to us because our track record says it all. With over a thousand company projects in recent memory, it just doesn’t get any better than this!” When not assisting the engineers at BEC, Monte continues his work as a residential real estate agent. Over the years he has worked as a home construction subdivision superintendent, a psychotherapist, a computer engineer, a small business owner, and an Air Force rescue pilot. Native to Colorado, Monte was a member of the CU Boulder swim team, eventually graduating from UCLA with a degree in history.
